The River São João

The river São João rises in the mountains near Cachoiras de Macacú and flows, almost 100 m wide, through the village of Barra
de São João into the Atlantic ocean. The scenery at the river bank changes towards the mountains from the colonial style houses, the ruins of the historical bridge, the old trees, past at farms and mangroves, up to the jungle landscape

The area was recently transformed in a nature protection area and this allows you to enjoy an original virgin forest-, river- and mountain-landscape in full courses. One can observe many birds and other animals in absolute peace. No industry clouds the clear, tropical warm water.
