Soon after the discovery more than 500 years ago
begins also the story of Barra de São João
• 1500 Discovery of Braszil through the Portugueses.
• 1619 Jesuites from Cabo Frio
establish Arraial de Barra
de São João
at the river
Peruíbe (today Rio São João) and construct the chapel São João Batista (to honour John of the Babtists).

• 1700 Foundation of the village Aldeia de Ipuca
(today Aldeia Velha) submontane by the river.
• 1748 The church Sagrada Família de Ipuca is constructed with the help of the Guarulho-Indios.
• 1761 The inhabitants of Ipuca are moving
to the banks of the river.
• 1801 The inhabitants are moving close to the chapel São João Batista at the mouth of the river at Barra de São João and are building the new church Sagrada Família at the municipal park «Praça da Alegria» (today «As Primaveras»).
• 1813 The city Macaé is established as the capital of the region, to which São João and Indaiaçú belong (today Casimiro de Abreu).
• 1839 The poet Casimiro Marques de Abreu was born on the 4th of January at Barra de São João.
• 1859 The book «As Primaveras» from
Casimiro de Abreu is published.
• 1860 Casimiro de Abreu dies with 21 years of
tuberculosis. All his belongings were burned.
• 1888 The slavery is abolished in Brazil. Now the economic decline of Barra de São João begins beacause of movement of labour.
       
 
• 1889 Brazil becomes the Republic of the United States of Brazil.
• 1890 Barra de São João receives the status of a city.
• 1925 The settlement Indaiaçú, that has already a railroad connection (Rio-Vitória), becomes government district of Barra de São João.
• 1937 Bernardo Gomes donates the birthplace of Casimiro de Abreu to the city of Barra de São João and declares it to the House of Culture.
• 1938 Indaiaçú changes its name to Casimiro de Abreu to honour
the famous poet Casimiro. Barra de São João looses the status of a city.
• 1940 Building the railroad bridge
over the Rio São João.
It should connect Cabo Frio to Barra de São João, but the railroad line never was completed until here and so the bridge was released for the street traffic.
• 1957 Building of a new bridge over the river. The ruins of the old bridge (today «Ponte Velha») remain as a tourist attraction.
• 1974 The house of Casimiro de
Abreu was completely reno
vated and becomes a museum and interpretive centre.
• 1996

The old railway station of
the city of Casimiro de Abreu (built 1924) was renovated and openes as the House of Culture «Estação Casimiro de Abreu».

• 1999 Complete renovation of the municipal park «As Primaveras».
