1503 landed here for the first time Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512) on his third journey into the new world. From his fourth
travel he decided to bring back a large number of tropical timberto Europe. 1504 was established a branch to produce Brazilian wood.history, culture and snow-white sand as far as your eyes can see . . .n the district Largo São Benedito and in the downtown area are many buildings from the colonial period, like the 1615 constructed church Nossa Senhora da Assunção next to the Praça Porto Rocha. The Franciscanian convent Nossa Senhora dos Anjos at Largo Santo Antonio was built in 1686.On the neighbour hill there is the
chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia, built in 1740. From there you can enjoy a fan tastic view over the city.

The fort São Mateus built in 1616 s the landmark of the city and gave also the beach its name: Praia do Forte. Here meets young and old on the snow-white sand beach with sight at the turquoise colored water. Today the bay is surrounded by modern high buildings and parkways.
